Remember this guy? On the July 13 show, Vincent Valenzuela went into Final Jeopardy! in the lead, but he ultimately lost because of an unusual situation: a clue typo!

For viewers at home, this was the way the final clue read:

However, the clue that was displayed on the gameboard for the contestants during the taping had a typing error. This is what they saw: “His slang term for an environmentalist is literally true of groups that used passive resistance vs. deforestation, as in India in 1973.” Changes the whole intention of the clue, right?

In case of a discrepancy between what Alex reads and what appears on the gameboard, contestants are instructed to defer to what Alex says. In this case, Vincent followed the rule, entered his response, and then looked up at the board to do a final check. The missing “T” made him second-guess his response and prompted him to change it from “tree hugger” (the correct response) to “Carl Sagan.” Had he not crossed out his first one, he would have won the game. The judges quickly realized the error and rectified it by inviting him to return today to play again.
