I was preparing to start graduate school the year following my Jeopardy! appearance, and I was dismayed to find that my housing lottery number was one of the last out of thousands. No university housing was available, and private landlords were so swamped with offers that most didn't even return my messages. I found one perfect apartment – the nicest in the area, the closest to school, and about midrange in price – but I was told it probably wouldn't be available. Yet when I talked to the landlady, it turned out that she had seen me on Jeopardy! and enjoyed my performance. It's her favorite show, and she tried out herself back in the '90s. We bonded instantly over the shared Jeopardy! connection, and she made sure I got the apartment. The cost savings over the course of my degree were bigger than my actual Jeopardy! winnings!
